Design Detroit Core

Last week Haute is… Magazine had the supreme opportunity to be on site at the fabulous Loft @ 1420 in the Julian C. Madison Building for Detroit Creative Corridor Center, also known as DC3’s rebranding to Design Core Detroit. The name change comes with a refocusing on the UNESCO City of Design, in 2015 Detroit was the first US city to win UNESCO’S city of design award grant of one million dollars.  UNESCO if you are not aware is United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.  The organization is responsible for coordinating international cooperation in education, science, culture, and communication. It strengthens the ties between nations and societies and mobilizes the wider public so that each child and citizen:

Has access to quality education; a basic human right and an indispensable prerequisite for sustainable development;

• May grow and live in a cultural environment rich in diversity and dialogue, where heritage serves as a bridge between generations and peoples;

• Can fully benefit from scientific advances;

• And can enjoy full freedom of expression; the basis of democracy, development and human dignity.

“Our focus was on increasing the number of creative sector jobs in the Woodward corridor and our name reflected that,” said Olga Stella, executive director of Design Core Detroit. “Detroit has evolved and so has our mission and purpose in championing Detroit’s design-driven businesses.”

A huge swell of designers, artists and entrepreneurs came together to celebrate the name change.  There is a new logo as well as some changes in programming but the nonprofit will still have eight employees.

Local artists created murals using markers on white boards.
The crowds mixed and mingled through out the venue.
