Mills Pharmacy + Apothecary: Old World Charm in a Unique Urban Setting

When I think of the word apothecary an immediate flashback to years gone by comes to mind, a word not regularly used or referenced much these days, but upon visiting the Mills Pharmacy + Apothecary, I immediately saw a connection between old and new.  This beautiful new pop-up shop hearkens to both an old world sensibility while embracing a newness of wellness and healing that blends in perfectly with the new “Detroit.” Mills Pharmacy + Apothecary (  is one of the latest retail enclaves branching out in the Midtown area.  Sleek and modern but still airy and accessible Mills is part/beauty, part/medicinal, and part/perfumery.

Mills offers a wide variety of products from Europe such as Panier des Sens, Mad et Len,  Leonor Greyl, Cire Trudon, and Korres.  As well as made in Michigan products such as perfumes by KEROSENE niche perfumery produced in Marysville MI. and sfumato – Natural Fragrance House manufactured in Corktown Detroit.

KEROSENE Niche Perfumeries display of made in Michigan unisex scents.

sfumato’s – Mocha Valentino scent is locally produced.

Chai Tea concentrate from Brooklyn NY.

From cosmetics bags!

To candles and candies.

Beautifully packaged chocolates.

Men’s grooming products.

While this store does not have the full pharmacy, it does carry many of the same brands as the Birmingham store and even a few new ones.  The plans are to remain at this temporary location until December and then move to a more permanent space depending on how well the shop does. Retail Director – Rita Sayegh herself a lifelong Detroiter was pleased and thrilled when the company announced the pop-up venture in Midtown “As of now business is great, people are embracing retail in Detroit, our traffic is building every day.”

Purchased by the Boutros brothers in 2010 the Mills Pharmacy + Apothecary remains a staple in Birmingham MI. The brothers kept a promise to keep Mills true to its origin as a customer focused brand that believes in the community.  After 70 years in business Mills is still going stronger than ever.  Be sure to check out Mills Pharmacy & Apothecary both the new Detroit shop and the original Birmingham locations and be sure to tell them Haute is… Magazine sent you!

Fun Facts: Apothecaries, bodegas, and boutiques
Apothecary, bodega, and boutique may not look very similar, but they are all related both in meaning and in origin. Each of these words can be traced back to a Latin word for “storehouse” (apotheca), and each one refers in English to a retail establishment of some sort. Although bodega initially meant “a storehouse for wine,” it now most commonly refers to a grocery store in an urban area, especially one that specializes in Hispanic groceries. Boutique has also taken on new meanings: its first sense in English (“a small retail store”) is still current, but it now may also denote “a small company that offers highly specialized products or services.” Of the three words, apothecary has changed the least; it has gone from referring solely to the person who sells drugs or medicines to also naming the store where such goods are sold.
