Bikes are the New Automobiles
By Damon Mackey – Certified Group Fitness Leader.
I am sure you have noticed by now that bikes have taken over the road! Certain parts of Michigan even have designated bike lanes giving bikers easier access to the streets, and some are even riding their bikes to work these days. Back in the day we rode bikes for fun, not realizing that it’s a great form of exercise, too. Now it’s combined with exercise, fun, and adventure.
I decided to put my car keys down, dust off my old Schwinn 10-speed of many years, and get on the road. After I summoned a few other fitness buddies to join me, we decided to do a bridge-to-bridge journey (Belle Isle Bridge to Ambassador Bridge). A straight shot down Jefferson would be cool, so I thought. The real plan was to start at the foot of the Belle Isle Bridge and take E. Grand Blvd. through the city and end up at the Ambassador Bridge. It was a grand bike tour through parts of the city, including Mexican Village. We ended up riding about 16 miles in a little over 2 hours, with a few stops along the way for refreshments.
Currently there are a number of bicycle clubs that tour through the city such as Monday night’s infamous Slow Roll, the Oak Park E-Z Roll, and the People for Palmer Park, just to name a few. I will most definitely be riding with one of these clubs to bring you an inside look at how they roll.
What a great way to exercise, get in shape and enjoy the city while burning no gas – just body fat. So watch out cars, bikes are taking over!
