Détroit Is The New Black – Contemporary Retail At Its Best

By Robere Lett – Publisher

I was so intrigued by the thought of DITNB or Détroit Is The New Black that I had to stop by this amazing boutique cum art gallery.  The spacious location is a picture of modern freshness in the heart of downtown Detroit. Owner & CEO Roslyn Karamoko has created an incredible space that not only ups the ante on fashion in the “D” but leaps Detroit into the world of high-end retail.  I say high-end because the look gives you everything that you would find in New York, LA, as well as London and Paris and the prices, are quite reasonable considering.  One of my big fears with our cities revitalization is that prices climb ever higher to the point of craziness.  Walking in I was immediately greeted by Timothy Schumack the shop concierge who gave me the full scope of what DITNB was all about.  Starting with the correct pronunciation (“Dey-Twa,”) the french pronunciation.  “We are picking up on Detroit’s French history, while creating a more sophisticated approach to the Detroit brand,” stated Schumack.  Part boutique – part art gallery.  I was taken aback by the sheer size.

The large impressive sculptures and installations that flow throughout are by the extraordinary artist and sculptor Leon Dickey alongside nationally acclaimed fashion designer Tracy Reese’s Plenty brand both are Detroit natives.  Product lines such as Douglas & Co, Anthony Neil, and Will leather goods, personal grooming products such as Naked Beard Balm and The Lip Bar vegan lipsticks are made in Detroit products.

Tee’s, sweatshirts, and tote bags are adjacent to beautiful designer coats and dress and even furs pieces from Le Détroit Furs.  Everything is specially selected by Karamoko for its uniqueness and high quality.  I bought two DITNB sweatshirts and the feel of the fabric was amazing.

The day I stopped by there was an incredible light installation in the gallery with works by several local artists.  DITNB offers up its vast space for events and art shows.

With new and decidedly inventive crops of businesses such as Kit & Ace, Nike and John Varvatos making the journey to downtown Detroit, joining some of the earlier retail leaders like Shinola and Moosejaw the city is no longer absent of choices when it comes to shopping, and it appears not to be slowing down.  Check out this incredible space and be sure to tell them Haute is… Magazine sent you!
