Lisa Freede: Celebrity Jewelry Designer

by Robere Lett, Publisher – Haute is Magazine

Meeting Lisa Freede is like meeting an old friend – one you haven’t seen in a while, but still has that special place in your heart; that person who is always easy and fun to be around. A native Detroiter tried and true, Lisa and I bonded over our local roots as we reminisced, going back in the day, over a city we both still love and have fond memories of.

Like Lisa, her jewelry is strong, independent, and beautiful. I was immediately drawn to her incredible designs that are simple; a bit rocker and completely chic. Born of creative parents (her dad a builder and interior designer, and mom a professional model), Lisa honed her skills while attending Wayne State University, and working for local retailers and wholesalers that eventually led her to bigger names like Calvin Klein and Faded Glory. When asked about her design philosophy Lisa says, “I love simple with a twist”. She believes in simplicity and clean lines, basics like black leather, pinstripes, and chain metal.  Regarding the future of design she elaborates, “I believe fashion is evolution and we are constantly evolving. Jewelry is a little different than clothing, in that it reaches back further, like the resurgence of yellow and rose gold that are coming back. I love geometric shapes and angles; for me fashion should never be overdone. I am inspired by great designers like Chanel and Armani, but I always give it my own”.

You can also see a bit of modern vintage in Lisa’s designs. When asked how she was able to get her designs seen and eventually into great stores like Neiman Marcus, Fred Segal, Bloomingdales, Intermix, The W Hotels (to name a few) Lisa says, “l just hung out at the places where I felt my jewelry belonged until finally they would think, ‘this lady has balls, maybe we should let her in’ and it worked”. Being driven, gusty, and humble are her three mantras. “My Detroit spirit taught me to be tenacious and fearless and to not give up”.

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention Lisa’s amazing celebrity clientele; Madonna, Rihanna, and Katy Perry all wear her designs. Lisa tells us how she managed to do it, “You have to build those relationships, and relationships are definitely the key; hard work, a bit of luck, and a product people believe in – and something that they want to own is a must”. With showrooms in New York and LA, that brings us to her incredibly affordable price points. When asked how her jewelry manages to be both beautiful and affordable, she shares that having great working relationships with the factories who produce her jewelry both in the US and abroad is vital; along with being a tough negotiator, as well as finding great quality materials at an affordable price, are the key factors that help to keep her marketability so strong.
