Luminous Divas Shining on Broadway
Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight and Natalie Cole will take the spotlight in a Jazz Age salute to the Harlem Renaissance.
The trio will join the stellar roster of “special guest star” vocalists this summer for seventh-time, Tony-nominated Broadway musical, After Midnight. The piece tells the tale of Duke Ellington’s reign at the Cotton Club and will feature 25 performances from dancers and vocalists. Set against an evocative narrative of Langston Hughes’ poetry, Duke’s original arrangements will be played by an onstage big band of jazz musicians hand-picked by the legendary Wynton Marsalis.
Other notables include Toni Braxton, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, K.D. Lang, Fantasia and Vanessa Williams, who have all led the musical in previous months. Named one of the best-reviewed musicals of the Broadway season, this production boasts a high-energy song-and-dance celebration threaded together by a host, played by Dule Hill.
In the best musical category, After Midnight is up against A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Aladdin and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. With this new trio of guest vocalist’s album sales collectively tallying close to 300 million worldwide, taking home this year’s Tony should be a breeze.
