Things We See and Hear by Marvin Thompson, Jr.
I think I have an addiction. Now before your mind starts racing – hold on. As a matter of fact, addiction may be too strong of a word; “keen liking” may be the more appropriate term. Whatever the case, I’m a strong fan of sweets: ice cream, cakes, pies, etc. If sugar is the main ingredient, count me in.
I bake things from scratch (on occasion), but this list of sweet recommendations are items that can be purchased locally. No high-end stuff here; if you’re looking for imported mango and peach cobbler made with Italian peaches (does Italy even grow peaches?), this may not be the list for you. These are quick go-to items that will satisfy your cravings, yet are still quite tasty. Remember to enjoy, and promise you won’t overdo it.
Oatmeal raisin cookie/Barnes and Noble Café, Royal Oak, Mich.
If you love oatmeal raisin cookies, these are great. A rather large cookie for $2, they’re great when microwaved. My wife loves them. Hurry; this store is closing soon.
Cherry pie/Achatz Bakery, Beverly Hills, Mich.
This pie is the best, and can be purchased by the slice or as a whole pie. They carry a variety of other flavors as well.
Chocolate cake/Boston Market, Southfield, Mich.
It’s displayed next to the cashier, so it’s rather difficult to pass by.
Red velvet cupcake/Taste Love Cupcakes, Royal Oak, Mich.
All of their flavors are great, but this is my go-to. Caution: due to sell-outs, they sometimes close early.
Cinnabon Delights/Taco Bell
When you’re in a pinch and can’t get to the Cinnabon store in the mall, these are a quick and tasty alternative to the original.
I’ve always loved this one.
Reduced-fat cinnamon swirl cake/Starbucks
For the health-conscience, this is very delicious.
Strawberry Shortcake Serenade/Cold Stone Creamery
It’s not listed on the menu, but here is the recipe: sweet cream ice cream, strawberries, yellow cake and whipped cream.
Blizzard (any flavor)/Dairy Queen
There’s no wrong answer here; all of them are terrific.
