Fashion Sense: Falling in Love With Collaborations – A Second Look at the Power of Design
Combine great designers with mega brands and the results are usually the same – a fashion mash-up made in heaven.

Recently in the fashion industry there have been huge celebrity and designer collaborations for major corporations such as Nike, Adidas, H&M, etc. Designers have begun collaborating with other premium retailers and companies to expand their brands and image. For many of the new partnerships, it seems that the targeted designer or entertainer is at the peak of their industry and the fashion market capitalizes on these magical moments. Corporations and retailers become increasingly more interested in bringing in the biggest and hottest names in both the fashion and entertainment industry. In the not so distant past, we have witnessed 3.1 Phillip Lim collaborate with Target, H&M collaborate with Maison Martin Margiela, Jeremy Scott & Adidas, Kanye West and Nike, etc. – all of these collaborations have brought forth amazing designs and concepts to the fashion industry.
However, this upcoming spring of 2014 will mark a new beginning for collaborations as world renowned Creative Director for Givenchy, Riccardo Tisci collaborates with Nike Air Force 1. I first stumbled across the images of this collection on tumblr and identified the source of the photo from both Vogue (UK) and GQ (USA) and instantly fell in love.
For starters, my appreciation for Riccardo and the work he has done with Givenchy in men’s fashion is far more personal than I can express, but this union takes my love for both Creative Director Tisci and the widely popular Air Force 1 to an all new high. For all lovers of street and urban fashion, the Air Force 1 can easily be integrated into any ensemble representing a touch of cleanliness with a modern metropolitan feel. “The shoe is universal yet somehow very personal… I travel all over the world, and I see people wearing the Air Force 1, and they wear it in so many different ways. And so I was thinking, what is the essence of the Air Force 1? And how do I take that essence and make my own statement? For me the Air Force 1 is not about gender, it’s not about a particular city, nor is it about a certain style. The community decides. It’s democratic. It’s love” expressed Tisci.
This highly anticipated collaboration is enough to send any male fashion stylist, blogger, journalist, model, etc. through an entire array of emotions as we all lie in wait for March to bring forth these beautifully crafted sneakers. As I write and contemplate the idea of wearing the Air Force 1 high boot with a pair of denim white shorts and designer v-neck or oversized shirt, I cannot help but to admit that this Valentine’s Day became slightly more lovely. Cupid most certainly is not to blame for this love affair, but my heart’s desire is to have these boots integrated into my summer wardrobe. All in all, Nike will have yet another win under their belt for this collaboration.
